Australia: South Australia

We start our trip in Adelaide, the dynamic capital of South Australia, and take the ferry to Kangaroo Island where not only kangaroos but also seals and koala bears cross our path. Back on the continent we head north and traverse Coorong National Park, a gorgeous area in which numerous kinds of water birds nest on the shores of the salt lakes. In Hahndorf, a village in a style that is unmistakably German, we see artists at work, among them the first inhabitants of Australia, the Aborigines. In the quiet area along the river Murray nostalgia reigns, and in the Barossa Valley, an important wine-growing district, we relish the wine.  By the time we reach Port Augusta, the landscape begins to show the characteristics of the Outback, and after a few days’ rest we accept the challenge.  We’re overcome by a feeling of  desolation in this landscape, arid and with sparse vegetation and ever changing colours of the soil. We traverse Lincoln National Park, are surrounded by pelicans in Venus Bay, and swim together with seals in Baird Bay. A flight across Flinders Ranges National Park gives us a good idea of an imposing wild region, formed in the course of millions of years. We meet an eccentric inhabitant of the Outback and in Coober Pedy, where people spend part of their lives underground, we get some idea of the opal industry.
