In the 14th
century when the Portugese Hendrik the seafarer sent his cadets to
explore the world, 1300km out from the Portugese coast they came
accross " the islands of the sea." Under the name " the Azores "
these 9 islands make up the archipel, now a part of Portugal. In this
installment of our trip, we are visiting 5 of these islands, Sâo
Miguel, Terceira, Sâo Jorge Pico and Faial. That the territory has a
volcanic origin is clearly to be seen from the changing lava coasts
and the many extinct craters that came into being over millions of
years. Earlier one part of the population made its living from
whaling, and in many places it is still to be seen that the fishing
boats had to be hauled from the water because there were no wharves.
Nowadays, on some islands cattle breeding is an important means of
livelihood. The islands offer a green spectacle but from April to
September they are at their most beautiful. The Azoren are little
pearls in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, The beauty of the
picturesque little towns and volcanic landscapes speak for themselves.
