Belgium:
Antwerp – Ghent –
Bruges
We take you for a walk
through the three most important historic towns of
Flanders:
Antwerp,
Ghent
and
Bruges.
Thanks to the river Scheldt Antwerp has been a
trading centre throughout the centuries. Authentic guildhalls
tell us about the rich past of the town. We see where Rubens,
the painter, lived and worked, and pay a visit to the
Ethnological
Museum
among other things. Of
course, the Sunday bird market is part of our programme, and we
pay attention to the diamond trade, the second important pillar
of prosperity of
Antwerp.
St. Baaf’s Cathedral is the climax of our walk
through
Ghent
, especially because of
the beautiful art treasures to be admired here. From the Belfry,
at a height of of about 300 ft, we enjoy a wonderful view of
this town full of art. Visits to the
Museum
of
Fine Arts
and the Clothmakers’ Hall are also on our
programme.
In
Bruges,
often called “Venice
of the North”, we
go for a boat trip and get a good impression of the picturesque
old canals. Walking we explore the quaint alleys and we pay a
visit to the town carilloneur who treats us to a recital on his
carillon. And it’s only then that we can no longer resist the
temptation of real Belgian chocolate creams.
